Writers Guild Foundation Starts Workshop for Veterans

February 12, 2013 |

If you’re a veteran located near Los Angeles or can stay there on April 13th and 14th, there’s a unique program created by the Writers Guild Foundation just for you. By hosting the Veterans Writing Project, the foundation aims to help veterans hone their composition skills with instruction from professional writers with background in movies, television, books, and more. Signing up is free as well as breakfast and lunch, and the only admission requirements is that you’re a veteran or active service member with a passion for writing.

While the workshop doesn’t promise assistance with finding jobs, it does allow veterans to have their work critiqued and refined by professionals. The combined industry experience participants will be exposed to is undoubtedly valuable to a serious up and coming writer, and so are the potential connections to be made.

Previous attendees have given the workshop glowing reviews, and praise it for everything from increasing writing ability to working through tough stories to tell. One veteran reports, “When I started writing, though, the fear was crippling. My mentor’s response was ‘Dude, fear is my middle name.’ Her words were powerful enough for me to feel confident to share my own words.”

For any participants who want to continue working with industry professionals, the program offers meetings each month at the WGF headquarters.
