What makes an employer a top veteran employer? Depending on who you ask, and what factors you use, you’ll get a bunch of different answers. On the Military.com Veteran Jobs Center we take a look at one list, the “35 Most Valuable Employers for Military,” compiled by Civilian Job News, which took a look at a variety of companies, both large and small, over different industries.
If you’ve had experiences with the companies below, how would you rate them? Are they deserving of being included in this top-35 list? Or are there other companies you’ve worked with who you think should be included? Sound off in the Comments section below.

Decorated unemployed USAF vet with 30 years resume cannot find employment. this despite being able to do most all jobs from physical to mental aptitude and in between. Please network just ONE position please !
Kevin 30 years strong congrats. Thanks for the sevice now enjoy being "retired"
Future retiree CG Chuck
There is no such thing as retirement,is there I mean once you are a veteran of this great country.
Im 22 a veteran. 4 years in the Marine Corps with skills in Avionics, supervisor, cashier, experience in retail, certificate in interior repair, and certificate in automotive appearance. Applied to and send resumes out to 50-60 companies so far still no response. I am now trying to get into trucking.
BNSF MAY SAY THEY ARE BUT AS A RETIRED SOLDIER I APPLIED AS A CONDUCTOR AND WAS TURNED DOWN I BELIEVE BECAUSE I AM OVER THE AGE IF 50
Not because of age, I have applied several times over the past few years with them. Still get a reply of not selected even though they post the rating I had as a prerequisite. Maybe being related to the human resource people would help, experience and education don't
I am a USAF vet and wife of a Marine. we have been at our current duty station for 6 months and I can't even get an interview. I have a security clearance that is still current and spent two years working as a contractor after i separated from the USAF. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I can't even get hired to be a cashier at the MCX.
I feel you. I have been out of work for over a year. No one will hirer me. I think its my age. 23 years U.S army and i will still out work any young kid they hirer. Army Strong Always.
Legal Shield….Great company to go start with for only 149.00
I feel your pain men. I too, have been unemployed for the past 7 months. I have put in countless resumes and have not gotten any results from any of them. Age discrimination is definitely "alive and well" in this economy. I would love to have a job instead of sitting around the house all day.
Try finding a job after 30 of service, 56 years old and not so perfect credit score. The VA Rep at the Employment Office told me that it is against the law for employers using your credit score on you after running your SSN through the system. It sucks. Bad credit doesn't mean you are a bad hire and not a good worker.
What could the employment office possibly be doing wrong? Or better yet what could you be doing ( or have done in the past) wrong to need the employment office?
I agree 33 yrs of service 52 yrs old BNSF rejection letter beat me home. LOL applied at Walmart for seasonal help got rejected. Age discrimination is alve and well. Got told by
the Post Office I was to disabled. Lol.
I am listed a 40% myself and I am so tired of rejection letters or no letters at all. The only way I find work is when I leave off that I was in the military. Usually my injuries don't allow me to last long or to many missed days due to medical appointments. I have had seven surgeries since 1997 and another next month. I have been on every web site that I can find that says they help veterans. I find that ALL say the samething and the end result is nothing. This Wounded Warrior Project does not have any Represenative in Virginia.
I never could understand that. Lets hope that they will never have to face beening unemployed.
this list for the 35 best employers for veterens, well, be careful because I do not know what MILITARY.COM is listing G4S as a employer who is military/veteran friendly??? Because G4S is not, steer clear of G4S as an employer for any veteran. they have only clowns who where dishonorable discharged or OTH out of the military running this company. vets who honorably completed there contract, successful people who had productive careers will be used by these clowns to advance there position within the company. stay far away from G4S!!!!!
One that was not listed is Federal Express. A lot of time it's part-time hours, but my son started working there when he got out and he said a lot of the dock workers are in there mid-late 40's. Good pay, he's already had 2 raises in a year. Just a possibility. I hear the same good things about UPS. I know you aren't intelligent men and these jobs are not going to put to use that intelligence, but, especially for those of you that can drive a fork lift you'll do great and have an income.
If anyone is in the Philadelphia area looking for employment (law office; data entry/communications) reply to this add. Or if anyone knows how to get a list of unemployed vets in my area, my firm is looking to expand and we are setting preference to ex-military men and women. :)
re: SEARS JOBS – you can't search any Sear's companies jobs without some kind of social networking and "jumping through hoops,"
I know you guys are having a rough time but we women vets are hitting brick walls as well. I had to extend my assignment in Iraq for a year because I didn't have a follow on job after I retired. I took the first offer I got. I hate the job but it is a job and it puts food on the table and pays the bills. The people in congress care very little about us and there are more of us coming home every month facing the same bleak employment out look.
I started reading these comments and was immediately demoralized. Issues of agism and other forms of veteran discrimination really sets sme off! I'm working in Public health i California, but plan to retire from State Service next year1 I KNOW I'll have to go to work to make ends meet, as I don't like having a "fixed income"! I put in almost 24 years in the Air Force and have always had "traanferable skills"! But knowing that these employers want the best worker for the cheapest price, I think they automatically gravitate to the "kid" walking through the door1 they know thay can't have their way with us! They're afraid of "savvy" people like us! BUT…WE can keep on trying. I'll make sure I come back here If I find the answer and share it with ALL of you! Just have faith guys! Something will turn up!!!!!
Add AlliedBarton Security Services to the mix. They hire a lot of Vets. I just started here and so far the personnel have been great to get to know. They promote from within too.
I would not recommend BNSF Railway. I worked for them for 10 years after retiring from USAF. They recruit veterans not because they have any respect for them, but because they have such a high turn-over among employees and constantly need replacements. Very unpleasant, high stress working environments at all levels.
i am a retired veteran with 23 years of service and 80% disabled. After retiring from the military I went right to work in the healthcare field. after working for a local Medical center and out working my co workers. I did not fit in I wanted to get the work do so we all can sit down together. instead when I went to help them out they left me doing thier job while the sat down and talk to the boss. Most of the people I worked with were my kids age, I lost my job because of internal politics, Most of the Civilian worker are lazy and are looking to get payed 8 hours when they only do 4 hours of work. Im 53 years old and for the past year have been out of work. Everyday I place 3-4 applications with no hits. I have the experience and the education so I beleive it is my age.
I am in the same boat as you are. Don't let this get you down continue to apply. We are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
To all the veterans__Thank you for your service. Do not give up, fight for your rights.._I am a female veteran who was in Law enforcement for about 19 years. I retired from the military with 22 years as a disable veteran serving desert storm, desert shield and Iraq. __My fears are those who discriminate because you are disabling and because you are a veteran. (Man or Women) I was a platoon sergeant and lost two of my soldiers. Can you imagine how I felt? This still haunts me today.__After returning from Iraq, I did not wait until I thought I was ok. It was because of my dedication, I went back to work within two weeks of landing on US soil._With the years in service as an officer, there were comments made which I am at liberty not to say at this time. The comments became worst and after reporting the inciden,t to this day nothing was done.__See, I was the only female administrator, and it was ok for the others to sound off to ugly remarks, behind my back and in front of other co-workers
For four years I worked as a GIS Tech. at a local company. In November of 2010 a company called C.A.C.I. bought us out, on 10/24/2011 I was brought into an office and told that my position had been eliminated. I am a USAF veteran with a 40% disability rating. So much for their claim that they are a Vet friendly company. I was never late and I never missed a day due to my disability. They never sent me the information about insurances or any of the other things that they said they would send me. When asked by one of the supervisors if I was a combat wounded vet I said no I was not, her response was "oh then I don't have to respect you". If that's vet friendly I'm confused. I had 4 years of seniority had just been given a $1.50 an hour raise and was laid off while people on an improvement program with less time with the company were kept on. Don't believe their press.
I have applied for all of these companies no phone calls no e-mails this list is a crock. If they hire vets its one out of 10.
Check out the G.I Jobs Top 100 Military Friendly Employers List. They do not charge companies to be on their list and actually vet each organization to make sure they really do what they say. CivllianJobs.com 35 Most Valuable employers list is full on names that pay them for their services. All of their clients are listed. I looked into these companies and almost all of them dont have military hiring on their websites.
I know for a fact that BNSF looks at your age and if you are over 50, you know where the ole resume goes. I have a friend, walked my resume over to the front office, Yep, fully qualified for the position, but what is this, and pointed to years of service. Last I heard from them.
Hey, don't knock all the civilian employers. I have been applying at AAFES for the last 5 years. Have not heard once from them.
Try Intel Corp I am Ret Navy been working for Intel 15yrs. Intel continues to hire Vets for many reasons namley your trainable, your disiplined, among many others. Just in my group approx 60% ar prior military. Infact Intel is so miltary friendly that i am suprised they are not in the top 10 much less not even on the list. Wonder how much investagation really went into making up this toop 35 list. Not much i supect.
I am a retired USAF cop who went to work as an independent Contractor, security consultant!!! After that job went away, I attended a job fair where a recruiter advised me that my Undergraduate Degree was so far back (graduated in 1998, before retiring) that it might as well be a high school diploma. I decided to go back to school and recently graduated with a Master of Science in Security Management. My opinion is aligned with some of your comments…that there is indirect age discrimiination. For the record ATTENTION EMPLOYERS…, I AM OVER 50, THAT DOES NOT IMPLY THAT I AM BRAIN DEAD OR LAZY.
The company I work for is not listed, Harris Corporation, I know quite a few vets working here. I hired on after getting out of the Navy and have been with them ever since almost 25 years. Every Veterans, Memorial day the CEO sends out a message to all Vets thanking us for our service.
All veterans!_Due you suffer from PTSD or TBI or both ?a org. called V.A.N. out of west Virgina . that has suggested things for Veterans working in Aircraft conpanys /ect. certain recommended conditions the employer could ease some the issues. Problem is no body cares about veterans and employer just soon fire you because the don't give a crap! They asked you how to accomadate your needs but clueless how to help you! Help is out there but nobodys lifting any fingers! And voc-rehap is shamful joke!
Thanks for your service veterans; it is really appreciated and not all forgotten!!_
It sounds to me as like age seems to become a factor when trying to get hire, the best way to approach this will be to imply that age adds experience and focus on the things you did on the military that translates into the civilian sector, if you tell a recruiter that you were Tank Battalion Sergeant they won’t understand that, but if you tell them how that position prepared to manage others and how your organizational skills are sharp because of it, they can understand that. __When it comes to discrimination, look for large companies that have federal contracts, because those companies have to have by law diversity and inclusion programs and are audited all the time. Discriminating for those types of companies could cost them millions in fees; they are less likely to do it. Out of the 35 top lists I know for a fact that the Flour Corp and G4S are federal contractors, the rest I am not sure about.
Hope this helps somebody and please don’t give up!
