The Mouse is going military, according to the Disney Blog, which announced today that the Walt Disney Company is starting a new initiative to hire, train and support returning veterans. The initiative includes 1,000 jobs and career opportunities for veterans over the next three years, support for veterans and their families as they transition into civilian life, and a public awareness campaign to encourage all employers across the U.S. to hire veterans, with the motto “Heroes Work Here. Employ excellence. Hire veterans.”
Disney President and Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Iger stated, “As a new generation of America’s military men and women transition into civilian life, we are increasing our commitment and support for these modern day heroes… It’s a measure of our respect for how much they have sacrificed on our behalf, and our sincere gratitude for their extraordinary contributions to this country.
“The military values of honor, integrity, commitment, and courage, along with the skills and experience they’ve gained through their service, make veterans incredibly valuable employees for any company.”

what about the vets that don't have a job now?
nobody wants to help those of that need an entry level position, and not housekeeping. There is no respect for the enlisted.
If you don't have a degree in engineering and/or 5+ years experience, don't waste your time. There is nothing here that is entry level unless you want to be a house keeper. Some of us went into the Military right after high school and had to get out due to injuries. I haven't had a chance to get these kind of credentials. Lets get some help for those of that need it!
Use your GI Bill to get the training. It's one of the most valuable benefits you've earned. I passed mine along to both of my kids who are attending college now. I've worked hard enough and want them to get the education I wish I had in my youth so they'll have a leg up on the competition without the debt right out the gate.
If your injury is combat related you have more opportunity than non-disabled vets for hiring preference. Now use the GI Bill and get an education.
I work at Disneyland and let me tell the job offered to me was custodial and you dont ever get 40hrs thier college program kids get 1st picks and they treat you like crap. Please look for work else where you dont want a job here the only perks are free admision for you and the family thats it._
I am a veteran with 14 years of experience, an MBA, and previous Disney work history. I submitted my resume for 6 different jobs at Disney and haven't heard from them on a single one.
Bryan, I know me too. Same deal. WDW work hist and applied 4 time never hear a thing. Its become like a kind of Wizard of Oz nobody behind the curtain
did you ever stop to think maybe you both were black balled?
Blog states "hire, train and support RETURNING vets. Does this mean for Iraq and Afghan returning vets or vets period. I'm a Gulf War Vet. Am I included as well?
It probably applies to returning vets only. I'm a Gulf War Vet too. I can't even get a volunteer position with Good Will. Go figure! They claim they help the disabled, but I am NOT disabled and can't get hired or volunteer work.
Hey, I'm a gulf war vet and I applyed at my towns tree cutter/landscaper and cut trees in Ohio after my open heart surgery and i guess I didn't answer their stupid 10 questions right and I haven't heard back. I also did 4 yrs. in the Navy and the hire a vet program is nothin but a joke. Now I Just had another open heart surgery again for a bad valve from birth. Did 12 1/2 yrs in the militay, put my life on the line and I guess that really doesn't matter .
It looks like Disney is offering assistance, training and jobs for all former U.S. Armed services veterans, regardless of when or where you served according to http://heroesworkhere.disney.com.
What the veterans who need a job now
vet "2" huh? And you have the same question as the original vet above who recieved a very honest answer from Ken. Did you not like that answer or something? Get out there and start looking! So sick or reading these boards filled with nothing but people crying for handouts! I know the service didn't teach ME that. And guess what folks…enlisted with no degree. Not crying for a handout here. Get to work for yourself and quit depending on others.
check usajobs lots of job there for militrary member or retired
I've been on it for 3 years now and had one interview
The thing with usajobs.gov is that you have to match key words. The best thing to do there is to copy the duty description and then edit to where it matches what your past work history is, I have found that this is the best way to get through the matrix of words that you have to match.
Will Vietnam veterans be included or are we still persons non grata because we're older ?
Or us caught in the Cold War between wars?
No we are still classafied just like we were when we came home. Like when you got the look away look like you had done something wrong. I was proud to of done what my country had asked. But I soon found out that was wrong.
Those of us who don’t have jobs now are blanketed with the label of being “damaged.” If you notice the time frame, it coincides with the announcement of the military reducing the number of troops. The troops that will be reduced first will be those who are low on the totem pole whose skills are limited and can be laborers. Believe me, there will not be many, if any real jobs for those who need them most.
Real jobs? I thought any job would be a real job to someone that doesn't have one. I've worked for peanuts in bad times because a little money was better then no money.
Don’t be discouraged bothers and sisters. There is jobs out there you just have to grab something until something better comes along. Hold on to your integrity and honor and never give up.
Very wise. Take whatever job you can get. Do it amazingly well and the world will be a better place. Served in the Army for a 3 years got out got married then ended up divorced, with 4 kids to raise, started as a dishwasher, was the best dish washer you will ever see :) and now am the Executive Steward of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Remember life is an adventure, Do whatever is placed before you the very best that it can be done. Always hang on to your dignity!!
God Bless You Debra! I pray that your "x" was honorable, ethical and moral and helped you with the kids!
I have a Bachelors, eight years military and another five years in corporate managment, and I have been employed since last November. Nice words, but they won't help me pay my child support.
What about the vets from the seventies and eighties. Did everyone forget about us and only cream over country now. Give me a break this love fest will will end.
I get no recognition for my service and others who were left overs from Vietnam and trying to adjust to the New Army.
You have not been forgotten. You opened the doors for mnay of us as we opened the doors for those who still served. We do recognized the services you rendered with honor to make our lives better. Don't be discourage.
I agree with William, I am a cold war Vet 3yrs in Germany 86-89.. went to JR College.. only gov job i ever was offered was 2nd shift food service.. oh and FYI your medical records are not confidential!!!
I just checked to see what jobs they would offer me and it was a joke. This is degrating to all of our vets and to any people in general. It looks good for disney to do this. But only want the vets to fill their crap jobs that they cant keep filled. This is sad and disrespectful.
Not to mention, most of the jobs require 4 year or more degrees.
Are you REALLY that surprised??? lol
IF I LIVED CLOSER TO DISNEY I SUR WOULD APPLY FOR A JOB THERE..EVERYONE I'VE TALKED TO WHO DOES WORK FOR DISNEY LIKE IT
I live near Disney's Burbank location. I'm a 61 year old vet and I ran my own media duplication company for 30 years. That's a lot of experience I'm bringing to the table… I need work and my capabilities are endless.
What do you have for someone like me, Disney?
Mosst likely you are over qualified.
Semper fi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hello gary i am a us army veteran that has been deployed twice and my mos was 31b i was a combat MP if you would like to contact me my email is htorres214@hotmail.com
Everyone out there is right in one way or another to a certain degree. For those who do not have a job please do not give up! At point or another a new job does require to start at the bottom again; just like in the military – lowest rank. But over time we all got promoted automatically or through testing. No this is not a sob story just for I manged to land on my feet through a church member in FL by networking; it works. Don't burn your bridges build them. For the PFC cussing (if that's you) one only shows your limited vocabulary in expressing your thoughts and talking to others; you're NOT a winner.
I just went to look at the Disney site, there are hundreds of jobs, sure most are entry level, but if you are not trained to be a doctor, don't expect to get offered a job as one just because you are a vet. I retired two years ago and have had no problems finding work. Get off the computer and actually go look for one and quit freaking crying.
Shut up T Smith, how arrogant can you get! A lot of people CAN'T just "go out and look" for a job because it's to damm_d expensive. That's why the computer, e-mail and phone are so valuable.
It's people like you with attitude that mess everything up! Always got to be degrading and depress people instead of lifting them up with something positive.
Here's an idea: WHY DON'T YOU VOLUNTEER TO TAKE SOME VETS TO INTERVIEWS IN YOUR LOCAL VICINITY!!!
Can you do that?
Can you contribute instead of complaining?
Try it, you'll like it!
I'm an early 80's vet and before 911 I had no problem finding work in the computer field. Now; it seems the new graduates and "perfect people" are getting first dibs (experience takes a back seat). To top it off; my job of ten years went to India. I'm really not complaining; but c'mon. Unless Disney is coming to the midwest; I guess I'll pass; but I pray and hope for a better future for all of you vets, and if you can work there, you really should apply. I would if I was closer. One of the first things that we were taught in the military was janitorials, so we would fit right in.
all this tlk about jobs for vets, is it only for new vets? I am an older vet that went back to school thanks to my benifits and now I am out looking ofr work with a masters plus experience. Will Disney hire me? I ahve been aplpying anyway for the past two weeks just in case.
Not with your spelling & grammer issues
We need a" department of jobs" for "Veterans"…….. All veterans should have priority for gov't job openings in the USA!
EXCELLENT IDEA!
Want to start one with me?

If you look back to the beginning of federal employment, that is the exact reason why the federal employment system was created. It was created for veterans. Now a days, there are more individuals who can not speak perfect english is employed in our federal system. There should not be any reason why a veteran is'nt employed by the federal government.
Vets do have priority on federal jobs, it's call veterans preference points. and if your disabled, you get even more points. but just like someone stated earlier, they aren't going to hand you a job just because your a vet. MAKE YOURSELF MARKETABLE. and apply for jobs that have a degree of resemblance to your MOS.
I wish I live near a Disney Park so I could work for Disney, even though I am a Disable Vet.
I am reading this with sadness and hope- I am an experienced business executive, over 23 years, working in telecom, software and IT- I want to open an institute to train United States Veterans the skill of sales , coupled with a guaranteed job either working for my company or others with a guaranteed income above $50,000 per year… the classes would be held in Austin , Texas, your enrollment would cost you nothing , as I plan to enlist the Federal Government to bankroll that portion. Thoughts? Is this a good idea , would our veterans be interested ? Please respond. im trying to decide whether to launch this business or not.— LLL
Layne Levine
Just like the old saying "if it sounds too good to be true"
Layne "really" should you launch such a program? Put it this way, If I new this program was legitimate I would relocate for the training. Isn't that what the military does? Good luck with the Federal Government. If this becomes reality I would like to be your first student
Good concept. However, You would need to get the program blessed of by an authority in the business education world for certification processes. Contact the VA education POC to see what schools need to do to be credentialed. This is true even for a certification course. This will be needed for Vetst to be able to use their benifits to pay for the course.
Register with the VA as a veteran owned business. Consider an in-line course as well.
Also, you may try to apply for a grant to pay for start up costs or to pay part of the fee you will charge veterans.
To guarantee a job for a vet you may want to start with all the corporations that have partnered with the military,
I have started my own business in the holistic field and am in the process of setting up something similar.
Sounds like a worthwhile idea to pursue!!!
Yes I think that is a great idea! being a navy vet and would appreciate that alot if iwas to be one of those hired. Maurice James
Layne–
I have some additional ideas that would increase enrollment nationwide if you're interested in partnering or working together.
Contact me at EthicalAndMoralStandards at gmail and copy your message above please
Go for it!!!!!!
Layne,
I am a Vet also. I worked in the Air Force for 9 1/2 years, and so far have managed to land a job working in Health Care with Public Health. But it is not enough. I am looking for something so much greater then this. I would love the opportunity to learn a new and valueble skill, plus making double what I currently make. Yes, I would like your program.

I am a veteran from the Viet Nam era and I have applied about 10 times in the last 12 years since I have lived in Florida .I have worked as a master machinery mechanic all my life and would fit in great with the Disney parks ,but I never even heard from them once.I would vat least like a reply from them!!
Contact SeaWorld…they will reply.
publicity stunt. People do not understand what we are worth. Best bet is getting an HR person that was actually in the service. Or one of those people that love you to death just because you served. Although they have no clue what you did and think everyone was infantry. Also if you were national guard or reserve do you really think you have this awesome training compared to the regular army, marine etc? Just curious because I personally don't believe so, especially if you never deployed. And yes there is a huge difference from "training" once in a while, to lets say doing the job everyday. Our unit always had to fix national guard and reserve screw ups. Guard and Reserve need to be restructured. So look at yourself personally and see what you really qualify for. Don't over qualify yourself just because you served.
Well I was a prior service Active Duty NCO and now I am currently a Guardsman. We deploy just as much as Active Duty service members. You are correct, we dont do military training on a daily basis. However, we have a massive set of skills. Just think about it, not only are we soldiers, we are electricians, plumbers, fireman, police, postal inspectors, professors, and so on. We bring as much to the fight just as any other service member just due to our added skill sets alone. And obviously, we must do very well in those jobs to not have to go the Active Duty route. I mean who wouldnt want to be at home with their families and earn as much, and maybe even more as our Active Duty counter-parts. The bottom line is, we are an Army of One. Therefore, lets act like it.
I (and other reservists) worked harder as a reservist than did a lot of my full time active duty people and got awards for it from a 4-star directly. Don't demean reservists.
Because of our skill sets I have over heard active duty leaders request National Gaurd units to augment there units. That way they don,t have to waste time triing to find someone to repair things while in theater they already have the skills needed. We guardsmen dedicate ourselves to the military as wholeheartedly as anyone else and we deserve the credit we are given.
Sounds like You spent some time overseas Jay so I'll respect You for that. I'm also a Veteran of both IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN. I have four "COMBAT" Tours and by that I mean I wasn't a FOBIT and I didn't P.O.G it out. I believe I have better training than most Active Duty Soldiers and I've been in the Guard seven years. I was assigned to a National Guard SF Unit after graduating Ranger School. Jay You should be more respectful to Your fellow Veterans regardless of the status they are in. The fact that they volunteered to serve our Country is good enough for me. Sua Sponte Jay
Well said, sir. Some of us pulled duty for decades in SAC missile silos or alert shelters to deter an enemy with the capability to destory this country in under 30 minutes. We defeated an enemy without every firing a shot…one for the history books.
Its the usual BS to get some news air time so these corporations can look good. Disney coulds give a rats butt about hiring veterans.
The talk is here…. Where and how do I apply for a job that isn't going to humiliate me?
Looked over the postings and the requirements….. Do they really want me to be the Director of Social Entertainment? haha…. What does a Soldier qualify for at the Disney Corporation? Media, Entertainment, Game Development, Editor of ESPN, or Park Custodian? Get Real Walt.
With all due respect MSG Brown I am very surprised at your approach on this topic. These positions require unique KSA's The best thing I can tell you get your Degree in Busines Administration with a specialty in Project management or operations mgt. This will open doors for you in these areas. I am retired E7 11B got my my MBA while on active duty with Drill sgt duty, recruiting duty, 3 Iraq deployments, 1 afghan, 2 kosovo, 1 bosnia. Its possible. I know you can do it, just do it. Invest in your education if you have it already do it again
What ignorant person you are. Hence MSG making these stupid comments on the net. Give good advices or mentorship so the VETs can learn from your experience or may be to contact you for a positive feedback.
Many people in this nation have no respect for Veterans. That includes co workers whom have no military background and did not served and took jobs that a service person left to serve the country. Many took jobs during the Vietnam years and after and despided the returning vets even till this day. I Love tye people of the nation but many do not deserved the sacrifices we made for them just like we do not deserved the Sacrifice that Jesus the Christ my Savior and the Savior of everyone whom have accepted as Lord and Savior whom came on the Flesh. I also find it very hypocritical that people began to cheer the soldiers of the Gulf War and many people regarded the Vietnam era vets like scums whom some are still on the streets of the America they served after they were bomb with Mosanto’s killer agent orange. Is interesting that those in government and outside the government responsible for agent orange were never prosecuted but any enlisted non or commissioned officer if cut in some type of transgression is given massive punishment. Taxpayers are paying for Mosanto and Dow crimes today and gge crimes oc some corrupted government workers whomRaised their families out of
I am sorry about my phone keyboard errors. The last previous comment message section. Should say that also criminals whom worked for the Federal Government also were responsible for agent orange are today retired and getting their fat checks at the expense of all USA taxpayers.
There are many major trucking companys that hire and train drivers. The training is free as long as you stay with them for two years. They will hire vets of any age. If you want work apply. Nothing is free and when I see some of these people standing at intersections with there vet signs I just leep going because most of them go straight to the store and get a beer or to a nearby dealer for their drugs. Anybody that wants to work can. I have seen paraplegics paralized from the neck down working. Quit blaming everyone else, you can do anything you want if you try. Or just keep crying the blues and expect everyone else to provide everything for you. I for one will not. Get off your *** and get a job. Semper fi !!!

If Disney does not hire you
because of your lack of experience, why don’t you try trucking?
If Disney does not hire you
u of your lack of experience, why don’t you try trucking?
Listen up brothers and sisters, Some of you may disagree with me but if it hurts you then its true. As a retired E7, I can say that some veterans are having trouble finding jobs because they did not take the initiative in furthering your education and if you did, you may not have a degree that is properly accredited. Do not blame the economy which is nonsense and a poor excuse to blame someone else other than yourself. I retired from the army as a 11B with an MBA in HRM. I had no problem obtaining employment and I may say that I am a minority so if you thinking something like shame on you. You need to make the effort and investment in your education no matter how much it cost and get your degree, the most you invest in your education the more potential of income and employable it makes you. READ! the requirements before you apply if you dont meet it then do something to further yourself. REMEBER people in this tough economy company gets 1000;s of resumes on a daily basis, so they have a HRIS systme in place to help identify KSA that will narrow down their search. So if your resume is not properly written it will never be picked up by the system and it will be lost in cyber space. Get your degree, upgrade your degree, get up your behind and go to businesses and apply-dont quit. Take accountability for your own self. No one owes you anything. Unless your a vietnam vet that was drafted- everyone else your volunteered to serve your country. VETS are not forgotten its the VET the allows them self to be forgotten-no excuse. Former Drill SGT-This will Defend HOOAH!
Goldie???
My fellow Veterans, good if you have a job right now and hope it pays off for all the suffering you have to put up with all these years, God Bless you! The rest of the unemployed veterans, just turn to our savior Jesus Christ, praise Him and be thankful that we returned home. Employers, veterans are loyalties that have served their country well and protected our freedom, so that you can provide for the future of your families, the veterans would love to do the same but because of incompatible experiences or due to their physical service connected disabilities their chances of landing a decent job is very slim. All businesses across The United States of America and its territories should mandate at least 40 percent of its employees to be filled by US Armed Forces Veterans. Biba Veterans!
MAD CHARLES…AMEN BROTHER!! I served in the Navy for 20 years, from Viet Nam to the Gulf War! My company closed our store, and I have been out of work for 42 months!! NO ONE WANTS TO HIRE OLDER PEOPLE!! Thats discrimination!!
Quit your belly achin'. If you have mouths to feed like I do you need to man up and get any job that you can to get food on the table. Having any job is better than no job.
I see a lot of negative comments but what I see is opportunity for Veterans. Let’s give Disney credit at a time when America and vets are looking for jobs they have stepped forward. The glass is not half empty it is half full look on the bright side!
That's the way to look at it.
As with any corp. Its who you know that really decides if you get in, as I’m reading the comments I realize that there are plenty qualified individuals but one must realize that Disney uses this platform for
press. And really has no real vested interest in the Veteran I have seen this many times with different employers.
time and time again
im sure most people joined so they could get a better job than a disney clown.
If there are any Vets that are looking for real work, please send me an email. This is not a gimmick or internet spam. These are real jobs. Check us in the April article of G.I Jobs magazine under Veteran success stories. We were also selected as a G.I Jobs Top 100 Miitary Friendly Employer. I am a recruiter for Combined, and my sole purpose is to hire fellow Veterans. Send me an email, Joseph.Pennington@Combined.com . I look forward to speaking with you. I dont guarantee jobs, but i do guarantee you a shot at a career and a response to your application. Thats more than most companies. We have been in business for over 90 years.
Every time the US ends a war/conflict etc, the next thing is downsizing of the Military! for any reason they are letting soldiers go, it's very sad, what's even worst is that those people making these decisions, have never served in the Military period!! that would be about 85% of congress??? at least Disney is offering something! you have to crawl before you walk, We are Soldiers, we can do anything, we are taught to make Something out of Nothing! Make it Happen!!
It seems like us,(Vietnam and Vietnam era)vets take a backseat to everyone.I truly appreciate everything our men and women have done and sacrificed in Iraq and Afghanistan. And that they should get priority everything. But we are the forgotten ones. After working for a municipal government for 33 years,it must be a lot worst looking towards the top. As a veteran,i have been unemployed for four months, even with vet services.Maybe someday, someone will fix this mess we are in. And not by a MOUSE.
I think this is a wonderful gesture to reach out to veterans thanks Walt! If you are complaining because you have a college education or a masters degree and can't get hired as managment then I have little sympathy for you very few people start at the top, take a low level position and work your way up and be proud to have a job and not on welfare.
So where do I apply?????
This is another job witch hunt. Nobody wants to stay bahind when it comes to the military support. If you don't come up with something to makes up smile even when this is not what you really are doing then you will have problems. I don't believe that will hire 1000 or 100, this is purely PR. Don't forget that this is one of Obama's biggest supporter! Not been political just reality.
You will get a job in the federal civil services system as veteran…if you know somebody and have an endorsement from Michelle Obama.
I’ve been unemployed for a while now & have been applying for jobs like crazy. Nothing, no calls at all, but I’m still not giving up.
On another note, stop degrading each other. You don’t know what one Vet has been through or currently going through.
If you’re a retired Vet & advertise your self on here as such, get over it.
Moving forward, we’re Vets & we stand together, help each other, advise or provide advice.
Don’t fight against each other or use degrading remarks…..Vet to Vet.
VETS STAND TOGETHER, NOT APART!
WE’RE BROTHERS/SISTERS REGARDLESS OF SERVICE OR RACE!
Correction/apology……I meant if you’re advertising your self on here, by what rank you are or were when you got out of service………Get over it.
Now you’re a VET & in the civilian sector, Military rank has no affiliation.
STAY CONNECTED VETS!
Now there is a ALL VET Social Network called http://WWW.VETSVILLAGE.COM
check out their commercial on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og2VlZX-4T8&co…
I’ve read a few of the negative comments, and frankly I’m not surprised that you’re not getting hired by a place that says they are the happiest place on earth.
Having worked for Disney I can say this, if you want to work there, leave the bad attitude at home from the time you apply to the time you get interviewed, and after you get hired. Here’s a hint, we were called “cast members” for a reason.
funnny.
Good call Ken. Some people I guess just want stuff handed to them on a silver platter. I lost my job back in Oct. of 2007 and because I have a police record (very minor misdemeanor) and due to the economy, its becme the norm to do background checks. Since then I have worked a total of about 13 months (NOBODY wants to hire you unless your perfect these days) doing any job I could get my hands on just to survive and feed my kids. My current job is (was) shoveling snow for $10.00 an hr at 2 am. Yeah me, the mildest winter in 75 yrs here in Northern ILL. and I earned all of $300.00! Your so very right, check out the web site before you run your lips people. No job is beneath a person when its whats needed to survive. I for one am greatful God has blessed me with that $300.00. I would love to have a job working for Walt. Funny how the Marine Corps discharged him (dishonorably (?)) and said he would never amount to anything!!
Semper Fi Walt!!!!!!!!!!!
What's stopping YOU for applying for Disney? I'm sure they pay more than $300.00.
